1.2 You might wonder why we would want to study the Earth.
The Earth is our only home. It is the only planet we know that can support life. It gives us many things which we can use to make our lives better. Many of the things we use, like crude oil, cannot be replaced. Can you imagine that would happen if we were to continue using these things wastefully?
We need to understand things on the Earth before we can decide how best to use them. Furthermore, we have to realise how our actions will affect the Earth, which will in turn affect us.
The stid of the Earth will help us realise some of the problems that our actions may bring about. In this way, we may be able to prevent these problems from happening; and the Earth will be a better place to live on
